Maria Andzelm lived in Janowiec, Poland and lived and worked on a farm. The Germans occupied their town and took their stuff. They were already very poor, but they still helped people on the street. When Maria’s best friend was deported she wanted to do something to help, but what could a kid do? One day their father asked them to come to the back room. He had an important secret, they were going to hide two Jews, one of them being Moses. If they were found hiding Jews they would be killed. So to hide the Jews their father and Moses dug a little box underground to hide them. They had to do it very secretively. For the next two years they hid in the box. Maria fed them three times a day, and brought them books to read. Right before the war ended there was an attack. Maria and her friend rushed to a cellar. They stayed in there for two days. When someone came to the cellar Maria asked what happened to her family. The man said that her father was shot saving the two Jews. The rest of the family moved to help a widow with her farm. Then the family moved into a house that was being paid for by Moses. Later Maria married Moses. They moved to the United States and opened up a cigar store. Moses and Maria had two kids. Later Moses died of heart disease.
